Centering

Before you begin your dérive, feel centered in the world…wherever you are.

One might take inspiration from the Aztecs who viewed their ancient city of Tenochtitlan as the sacred axis mundi, the center of the world where the heavens, the earth, and the underworld meet.

Take a moment to feel the earth beneath your feet.

Sense the earth energies rising up to greet you.

Walking: A Sound Map

Moore, Thomas & Cannaday, Ashley & Zietlow, Sarah. (2012). The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America.

This is a Chladni acoustical pattern formed by particles of sand on a metal plate that were vibrated by a violin bow. Aztec sandstone in the canyon responds to sound the same way.

Each stone carries an ancient history. Our footsteps add to the story by creating an invisible sound map of impressions on the surface.
